Adrian Frutiger drew this face in 1988 after spending years thinking carefully about what a geometric sans could become if it was freed from strict geometric dogma. The name means "future" in French, and the debt to Futura is acknowledged — but Frutiger deliberately departed from pure geometry: the vertical strokes are heavier than the horizontals, the "o" is not a perfect circle, and the ascenders are kept deliberately short. Those quiet decisions make the letterforms feel rational without feeling cold, and readable without feeling bland.
